director’s notes

Looking back to when the internet first spread into our homes, my peers and I were still elementary school children. The internet, for better or worse, educated us. We were the first generation to have exactly the same things in common with someone born in Japan, London, or a small rural town in the United States. We finally found a way to escape childhood by creating a space that adults could not access. Can the internet be a nation? A place where we feel more at home than in the “real world”?

‘I will try to find you in the new system’, by utilizing seemingly irreconcilable material, is a story of friendship, specifically, an attempt to survive within the memory of something that no longer exists. The film proceeds through internet citations (drawing from GIFs, anonymous emails, MSN, old operating systems) and blends them with a film archive that is, in some ways, ancient, where blurred images of people from a distant time create a unique tapestry of faces that somehow remind us of someone. Compounding our own memory against the lack of definition becomes an act of rebellion against the inconsistency of memory itself.
