The tragedienne. The abandoned lover. The grieving mother. The hysteric. The diva…

synopsis

A Sad Woman reclaims these familiar figures of the crying woman through a choreography of bodies, rituals, and absurdity. Suspended between sincere emotion and learned performance, the film explores how feelings are staged, transmitted, and perceived. Inspired by the figure of the professional mourner, it revisits a history in which women publicly embodied the grief of others, mastering the art of making sorrow appear true. Echoing the emotional force of Greek tragedy while resisting its manipulative dimension, the film reveals the mechanisms of pathos rather than reproducing them. Born from the collaboration between choreographer Romane Piffaut and filmmaker Leïla Macaire, A Sad Woman reflects on the expectations placed upon women’s bodies and emotions, constantly required to appear authentic while remaining performative. Blurring the boundary between truth and artifice, dance and cinema become tools to question how emotion shapes our perception of reality. Both intimate and political, A Sad Woman invites viewers to reconsider female emotion, not as a spectacle to consume, but as a space of ambiguity, agency, and resistance.
